I was having problems with my laptop taking long to boot up.  Somehow I set it so that only absolutely necessary functions load on start up.  Now some of my programs don't function correctly and I don't know how to resolve it.
Now my laptop starts up quickly and there are hardly any programs running on the taskbar. When I initially boot up, I get a message that says "America Online will now install the riles required for me to connect to the service. Click yes to install these files. You may be asked to restart your computer, otherwise, you will not be able to connect." AOL worked before I made the changes. It can't install the files because I am not connected to the internet. My laptop recognized my wireless network in my house before, but it doesn't recognize it now. If I click on the "Help and Support", I get an error message that says "Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named Help and Support." I get this same error message when I click on "System Support".1 person needs an answerI do too

Go to the start menu>run and type in "msconfig" without the qoutes, then click ok, on the services tab make sure that the botton that says "Hide All Microsoft Services" is unchecked then click "Enable All", then check the botton, and disable any services that arent Microsft that you dont want started, If it's a case that you want AOL, then look at the manufacturer section to help make the Startup" tab and you may find some of your programs and applications that were disabled there (non-Microsft), just look at them all good and make the determination according to your specific needs, you can always modify them back and forth untill you get it like you want, You should make sure that you have the "Hide All Microsoft Services" botton checked each time you make any change though

one other thing, in addition to the advice given by securityguy. There's an app called ntregopt that will compress your registry, but not touch any keys or strings. This can, depending on the state of the registry, greatly decrease your bootup time.M.V.P. - Desktop Experience | M.C.S.A. | M.C.P. - MS Server 2k3, Network Architecture
